About this Course
This course explores core strategies in combined orthodontic–orthognathic treatment, focusing on two highly challenging clinical scenarios in skeletal malocclusion: surgery-first treatment for skeletal facial asymmetry and secondary orthodontic–orthognathic treatment after failed camouflage orthodontics.
The first part focuses on the surgery-first approach for skeletal asymmetry. It covers how to accurately determine the final occlusal plane before surgery, align the facial and skeletal midlines, ensure rapid postoperative orthodontic coordination, and manage complex factors such as soft tissue fillers and muscle memory.
The second part focuses on secondary correction after camouflage orthodontics. It explains how to move from dentoalveolar compensation to true skeletal correction through three-dimensional decompensation, gradually exposing the underlying skeletal discrepancy, creating space for orthognathic surgery, and ultimately achieving harmony between bone and teeth.
You will also learn key decision points in orthodontic–surgical teamwork, digital surgical simulation and splint design, differential diagnosis of facial asymmetry, and strategies for long-term postoperative stability.
What will you learn?
1. In surgery-first treatment for skeletal facial asymmetry, what key factors should be considered when determining the final occlusal plane?
2. For patients who previously underwent camouflage orthodontics, how can three-dimensional decompensation be achieved before surgery?
3. In preoperative planning for skeletal asymmetry, how can postoperative soft tissue changes be predicted and appropriate overcorrection be determined?
4. In combined orthodontic–orthognathic treatment, how can clinicians manage decompensation, occlusal interferences, mandibular third molar extraction timing, and postoperative elastics?
5. How does the differential diagnosis of skeletal facial asymmetry influence treatment decisions, and how can SPECT/CT be used to assess condylar growth activity?
6. What are the key factors that influence long-term stability after combined orthodontic–orthognathic treatment?
